For slaves an elite family
Chooses from among itself a leader
To rule over the rabble.
But what if there are no poor,
Others have factories, and I have a farm?

We exchange profits,
Prosperity grows,
The country blossoms,
But we notice,
When we look around,
The slackers around us are drooling,
Their envy and rage at the rich burns,
We need protection.

For the city, the state a reliable sheriff
To stop the evil robbers,
One’s own and the strangers’.
A strong-willed overseer, not a vegetable,
Not a father-tsar, but a watchman.
