A Buddhist pacifist raised
A revolt,
Gathered a bloodthirsty crowd
On the Maidan,
Outraged with a call to repentance
Fellow citizens exhausted by dictatorship.

“Pike him! We need revenge!
What peace is this? Down with the usurper!”
“Peaceful cooperation with a tyrant is false,
If not freedom, then better death.”

What humanity is — hard even to recall,
Calm is a phantom, victory — a mirage.
The monk pleads: “Stop killing!”, —
And inflames in the people a zest for violence.
